Our big boys

Some big boy moments that we've had lately (in no particular order):

  • Ellis swinging on a big boy swing at the Reaves' house when we visited two weeks ago during our spring break.  They are also quite good at climbing up the stairs onto the play structure too.  I can't wait to get ours in a couple weeks!!!

  • When we went to visit Nicole and the kids a couple weeks ago, I planned on staying there for their nap time.  Ellis all of a sudden wanted nothing to do with sleeping in the pack and play (they don't sleep in it often, but he has never had an issue with it before).  So, in order to get him to sleep, I took him out and laid him on Morgan's bed and he fell asleep without too much problem.  The same thing happened when we visited the Chandler's Saturday night.  We put them to bed and Ellis didn't want to be in the pack and play again so I laid him on their bed and he fell asleep.  Looks like we are going to have to figure something out for when we go camping this summer if he isn't going to cooperate with the pack and play.

  • Ellis has been very prompt in getting in his seat for meals, all on his own.  He tries so hard to clasp it all on his own too, but hasn't been able to figure that out yet!
  • Thanks to my mom, Logan has become more comfortable with wearing a hat.  They usually play with one at her house, so although he used to pull it off his head all the time in the past, he actually likes wearing one now - so we got him one of his own!

  • They are getting a little more gutsy at the playgrounds around here.  We went to the playground at the elementary school not far from here and they were climbing all around and even wanted to go down the slide biggest slide on the structure.  Unfortunately they couldn't climb up to get to it, so I lifted them up for them to slide down.

  • I've never been a YouTube browser, and never really understood how people just came upon these random videos on YouTube (maybe because I don't have time to just randomly search the internet), but Ellis has been huge on watching videos - both ones I've recorded on my iPhone, and lately even those on YouTube.  Today I found him watching this one: http://youtu.be/N2t_VL90m5I
It cracks me up to see him laugh so much when he watches it.  I have no idea how he found it, or any of the others, especially since the ones he finds are all toddler-friendly videos.
  • I have always hesitated with the idea of taking Ellis' pacifier away. We should have done it long ago, but never did.  And now that he is 2, I know its going to be even harder.  He doesn't use it all day, but sometimes if he sees it on the counter, he will grab it just because its around.  Lately he hasn't been using it as much so I was hoping that the transition would be just that much easier.  Well, yesterday after he got up in the morning, we never brought it downstairs with us and realized at lunch time that he didn't use it all morning (or even look for it on the counter).  We tried putting him down for his nap without it and at first all was good.  Wishful thinking I think, though.  Logan was fast asleep (which is rare) and poor Ellis was whining.  I knew he wanted it. Heck, he had no warning that he wasn't going to get it.  I walked in his room and told him to lay down and he gave me the saddest eyes ever.  I walked out and then came the full-fledged crying. So, I gave in.  I know, I shouldn't have given in so quickly, but I realize that this is just going to be a process - cutting it out cold turkey isn't going to work with this little guy.  Today, he didn't use it at all again until bed.  He did bring me the little pouch from the diaper bag that we use to hold an extra one, but when I showed him it was empty, he looked a little sad, but then got over it.  He did have a super duper nap though (maybe because he realized that when he got up, he couldn't use it anymore - ha!).  Yet another work in progress for us!
  • When I was out shopping this weekend, I decided to pick up a little potty.  The boys are no where close to hinting at wanting to potty train, but since we dropped the ball on brushing teeth (waiting too late to introduce it), I thought we could at least get a potty, let them sit on it every so often to introduce it and let them take it at their own pace.  So far its been quite funny watching them play with it.  They loved sitting on it (with their clothes on), but thought it was a bit weird when I sat them on it without their diaper on.

  • It hasn't been all serious growing up around here though.  We have our fair share of acting silly.  In fact last week, we took the boys shirts off to eat dinner (lasagna) and after dinner, they were being quite ridiculous.  For some reason they just love having their shirts off, or their pants off, or both and they kick up their craziness quite a bit.

You think they feed off each other much?  =)
  • We've really been working with the boys on their talking lately.  We are always repeating ourselves, reading books and having them point to pictures in the books and now they just love playing with the flashcards that they got from the Baird's for their birthday.  Today I was going through them with Ellis and Logan overheard (while jumping on the trampoline) and said "ship" right after I did, like it was nothing.  Yay for random word repetition!  One "tradition" we have while eating dinner, is to hit drinking glasses/sippy cups together and when we do, we always say "cheers" to them.  It started off as a joke when they first started using their cups a year ago, but now they always hold their cup up to us so we just kept it going.  Well, tonight after I said "cheers" to Logan, he said it right back and smiled.  Those are just small steps, but I'm hoping it continues and they both keep picking up other words here and there.
  • That's about it around here - for the fun stuff, at least.  I've been studying around here (and counting down the days until I don't have to study anymore).  I think I'll be a new person when I don't have to commit to doing math every night after the boys go to bed.  Ahh, all the free time I'll have.  Can you tell I've been dreaming of this for a while?  This class just sucked all excitement out of me with how time consuming it is, so I'll be happy to get that excitement back when it's over.
Have a good night everyone!  And let's all pray for some warmer weather and some sun around here.  The small peaks of sun around 5pm were nice and I'd like to see a little more of that in the coming weeks!
