What a week!

This week has been filled with emotions, but I'm happy to report that it has ended on a good note!

Tuesday was the end of the math class I took this semester!  I don't think I've ever been so happy to finish a class.  This was by far the hardest, most time-consuming class I've ever taken.  I am also happy to say that I don't have to take another class from the slightly very arrogant professor I had.

Also, on Tuesday, the boys had a speech evaluation.  I wasn't really sure how much I was going to mention on here about it, but I'm one that likes to keep it real, not just highlighting the good times, so here goes.  The boys aren't talking as much as I felt they should be at this point, and of course I've heard that boys develop later than girls and multiples later than singletons, so our boys were likely to talk even later.  Well, I didn't want to wait it out for fear that if they did have some legitimate delay, we would delay getting them assistance, so I thought it was worth a shot to get them checked out. Knowing that I didn't talk until I was much past two and now I don't shut up, is promising that they will be the same way, but I didn't think it would hurt to have someone evaluate their levels now.  Anyways, two women came to our house, from our school district, for 2 hours and it was a much more emotional experience than I was expecting.  Maybe it's because no parent wants to admit that their child is less than perfect, maybe because all of the "what-ifs" in my head of how this delay could have been prevented, maybe because of the demeanor of one of the evaluators that came, maybe a combination of all of the above.  Regardless, they tested them in a lot of different areas to see what they were capable of, but they gave a much "worse" performance than I was expecting - meaning some things that they asked them to do, that they are fully capable of doing, they wouldn't do.  Part of it, I think, was because  strangers were asking them to do things.  Logan warmed up quite easily and did a few things that he was asked to do, but after he did that, he wanted to go play with his blocks.  Well, when the woman kept asking him to point out pictures in a book she had, he didn't really seem interested.  Ellis wasn't really interested in anything the one woman was asking him to do.  She is the lady I wasn't really impressed with.  Maybe it was her mannerisms, the way she talked, too bold, too forceful, I can't really put my finger on it but I don't think it was a very welcoming way to expect a 2 year old to just comply to her requests.  Anyways, after they left (and of course the boys complied to everything I asked after they left - go figure), we went about our day.  A few hours later, as I was just about to leave to take my final, I got a phone call saying they did both qualify for services.  They will be receiving a home visit once a week to work on specific goals they will have and then they will be going to a parent/tot class with other 2 year olds where they will have a little more structured play time where they have little lessons linked in with their playing.  So now that I'm over the shock of everything, I think this will be a good experience for all of us.  It'll be good to see how they present things to them, because obvious speech therapists know the tricks of the trade, and incorporate it with the everyday things at home that we do.  Sure, I may be a teacher, but I have zero experience in early elementary or speech.

As I try to be more reflective myself, I was watching the skills they asked them to do, and realized that now is a good time to start getting them to sit for a few minutes at a time for more structured activities.  They love sitting with us to read books, play with puzzles, play-doh, etc., but usually its directed by them.  I don't force them to go play with a puzzle or read a book.  Those are just activities they like to do on a daily basis.  I want them to get used to sitting down at a given time and doing an activity that I choose for them.  This is definitely something they will have to get used to and I think that although they are okay with doing that for a few minutes at a time, having 2 hours of prompted activities, was just too much for them.  I was planning on putting little activities together for them to do over the summer, focused on age-appropriate skills, but I might start a little earlier and start things on the weekends with them.  One skill that Ellis wouldn't do when they were here, was putting coins in a bank - showing fine motor skills.  I think it was because the lady was trying to interest him into it by shaking the coins in the bank, which made a pretty loud noise.  Well, anyone who knows Ellis knows that he does not like loud noises, so right there I knew he wasn't going to do it.  The next day, I decided to pull out his bank and give him some pennies to put in there and he wouldn't stop doing it.  We even had to empty it again and let him put all the coins back in.  So there, mean lady, he can do it!  =)

Between the evaluation and my final, I was happy when Tuesday was over!

So, on that same topic, I couldn't help but smile this weekend every time Logan said a new word.  Last week he started saying cheers, but I about died when my parents were over and he said "cheers papa" to my dad.  My mom, dad, and I looked at each other like "did you just hear that?" and we all did. It was too cute!  He also repeated the color "red" referring to his blocks, and "pop" referring to popping the bubbles I was blowing.  Today he said "choo choo" while playing with his trains.  Then Ellis found some of their older baby toys that they don't really play with (they just like to empty the container and fill it back up) and all on his own, we heard:

Maybe it is all just a matter of time, but hopefully the services they will be getting will help speed up their speech development a little bit and lessen the frustration they have when trying to tell us what they want.

On to the happier part of the week - Wednesday to today.  Earlier this week we had pasta for dinner.  Logan, for some reason, likes to try to stick his finger in the hole of the pasta, and this dinner was no different.  I think he was actually quite pleased with himself when he was able to fit the rotini on his fingers so easily.  Too funny!

On Friday we were outside and I brought out a frisbee I got for Bella.  Well, the boys were more interested in running around getting it than Bella was, so why not wear them out running back and forth in the backyard?!?  At one point, Logan got it faster than Ellis and Ellis pouted.  So, Logan threw the frisbee down on the ground, Ellis went to go pick it up and then went up to Logan and gave him a high five as if saying "thank you."  It was the cutest thing ever!!!  Totally wish I had that on video!

Yesterday, after a little bit of drama with Toys R Us, we got the boys playground that we bought them for their birthday.  My parents came over to help put it together and with the awesome weather, we were outside all day.  I didn't realize how many pieces were in this set, but lets just say its a lot more intricate than I was expecting.  The directions said it would take about 8-10 hours to put it together, but with directions that weren't always clear, it was obvious that it was going to take more than what they suggested.  After about 8-ish hours working on it (stopping for lunch and dinner), Troy and my dad got more than half of it done.  Unfortunately the lack of daylight put an end to their work around 9ish, but it was probably a good thing - everyone was exhausted!  Today, Troy got a few more steps done, but the lovely rain again prevented him from continuing to work on it.  Hopefully doing a little bit here and there this week after work, we can have it done soon so the boys can enjoy it.  I took pictures of the process, but will post those once it's completely done!  =)  A huge thanks to my parents for all their help yesterday!

Well, thats it for now.  Hopefully everyone enjoys the nice weather we're supposed to have this week!

Cheers

Finally, we got it on video.  Logan saying "cheers!" while drinking his milk after dinner.  The last one he says on the video is the most clear =)

Our big boys

Some big boy moments that we've had lately (in no particular order):

  • Ellis swinging on a big boy swing at the Reaves' house when we visited two weeks ago during our spring break.  They are also quite good at climbing up the stairs onto the play structure too.  I can't wait to get ours in a couple weeks!!!

  • When we went to visit Nicole and the kids a couple weeks ago, I planned on staying there for their nap time.  Ellis all of a sudden wanted nothing to do with sleeping in the pack and play (they don't sleep in it often, but he has never had an issue with it before).  So, in order to get him to sleep, I took him out and laid him on Morgan's bed and he fell asleep without too much problem.  The same thing happened when we visited the Chandler's Saturday night.  We put them to bed and Ellis didn't want to be in the pack and play again so I laid him on their bed and he fell asleep.  Looks like we are going to have to figure something out for when we go camping this summer if he isn't going to cooperate with the pack and play.

  • Ellis has been very prompt in getting in his seat for meals, all on his own.  He tries so hard to clasp it all on his own too, but hasn't been able to figure that out yet!
  • Thanks to my mom, Logan has become more comfortable with wearing a hat.  They usually play with one at her house, so although he used to pull it off his head all the time in the past, he actually likes wearing one now - so we got him one of his own!

  • They are getting a little more gutsy at the playgrounds around here.  We went to the playground at the elementary school not far from here and they were climbing all around and even wanted to go down the slide biggest slide on the structure.  Unfortunately they couldn't climb up to get to it, so I lifted them up for them to slide down.

  • I've never been a YouTube browser, and never really understood how people just came upon these random videos on YouTube (maybe because I don't have time to just randomly search the internet), but Ellis has been huge on watching videos - both ones I've recorded on my iPhone, and lately even those on YouTube.  Today I found him watching this one: http://youtu.be/N2t_VL90m5I
It cracks me up to see him laugh so much when he watches it.  I have no idea how he found it, or any of the others, especially since the ones he finds are all toddler-friendly videos.
  • I have always hesitated with the idea of taking Ellis' pacifier away. We should have done it long ago, but never did.  And now that he is 2, I know its going to be even harder.  He doesn't use it all day, but sometimes if he sees it on the counter, he will grab it just because its around.  Lately he hasn't been using it as much so I was hoping that the transition would be just that much easier.  Well, yesterday after he got up in the morning, we never brought it downstairs with us and realized at lunch time that he didn't use it all morning (or even look for it on the counter).  We tried putting him down for his nap without it and at first all was good.  Wishful thinking I think, though.  Logan was fast asleep (which is rare) and poor Ellis was whining.  I knew he wanted it. Heck, he had no warning that he wasn't going to get it.  I walked in his room and told him to lay down and he gave me the saddest eyes ever.  I walked out and then came the full-fledged crying. So, I gave in.  I know, I shouldn't have given in so quickly, but I realize that this is just going to be a process - cutting it out cold turkey isn't going to work with this little guy.  Today, he didn't use it at all again until bed.  He did bring me the little pouch from the diaper bag that we use to hold an extra one, but when I showed him it was empty, he looked a little sad, but then got over it.  He did have a super duper nap though (maybe because he realized that when he got up, he couldn't use it anymore - ha!).  Yet another work in progress for us!
  • When I was out shopping this weekend, I decided to pick up a little potty.  The boys are no where close to hinting at wanting to potty train, but since we dropped the ball on brushing teeth (waiting too late to introduce it), I thought we could at least get a potty, let them sit on it every so often to introduce it and let them take it at their own pace.  So far its been quite funny watching them play with it.  They loved sitting on it (with their clothes on), but thought it was a bit weird when I sat them on it without their diaper on.

  • It hasn't been all serious growing up around here though.  We have our fair share of acting silly.  In fact last week, we took the boys shirts off to eat dinner (lasagna) and after dinner, they were being quite ridiculous.  For some reason they just love having their shirts off, or their pants off, or both and they kick up their craziness quite a bit.

You think they feed off each other much?  =)
  • We've really been working with the boys on their talking lately.  We are always repeating ourselves, reading books and having them point to pictures in the books and now they just love playing with the flashcards that they got from the Baird's for their birthday.  Today I was going through them with Ellis and Logan overheard (while jumping on the trampoline) and said "ship" right after I did, like it was nothing.  Yay for random word repetition!  One "tradition" we have while eating dinner, is to hit drinking glasses/sippy cups together and when we do, we always say "cheers" to them.  It started off as a joke when they first started using their cups a year ago, but now they always hold their cup up to us so we just kept it going.  Well, tonight after I said "cheers" to Logan, he said it right back and smiled.  Those are just small steps, but I'm hoping it continues and they both keep picking up other words here and there.
  • That's about it around here - for the fun stuff, at least.  I've been studying around here (and counting down the days until I don't have to study anymore).  I think I'll be a new person when I don't have to commit to doing math every night after the boys go to bed.  Ahh, all the free time I'll have.  Can you tell I've been dreaming of this for a while?  This class just sucked all excitement out of me with how time consuming it is, so I'll be happy to get that excitement back when it's over.
Have a good night everyone!  And let's all pray for some warmer weather and some sun around here.  The small peaks of sun around 5pm were nice and I'd like to see a little more of that in the coming weeks!

Goodbye March, Hello April

We are into our 4th month of 2013 already!  What's sad is that I still catch myself writing 2012 every so often!

With another month ending, it's time to look back at the challenge I made for myself for March - to limit the unnecessary spending.  This included no eating out, no stops at a drive-thru for a pop, no random purchases at Target, etc.  And the end result?!?  I did pretty good - not perfect though.  I did have a little lapse one Friday at work and went out to get something to eat.  And, just this past week, Troy and I got takeout for dinner.  But no extra, unnecessary purchases elsewhere.  2 "mess-ups" in the month isn't too bad I suppose.  As Troy says, though, we could have spent a lot more if we would have went out to eat once a week or more like we did in the past, compared to the two times all month that we did.  So, we did save money in the long run.

As far as the month of April goes, I think I'm going to focus on a fitness goal.  I have already challenged myself to no pop and no candy (my two weaknesses), in order to eliminate extra calories going in my body, but considering my main goal for my body is to tone up, that doesn't happen by just eating less.  I have to get moving more.  So, this month's challenge is to move more.  This includes not taking the elevator at work (my classroom is on the 4th floor) and being active for 20 minutes or more, 15 or more days of the month.  I am still taking a class and I am still working full-time, so I can't guarantee activity every day (yet!), but hopefully I can get some sort of activity for half the days of the month.  This might include taking Bella for a walk/run, doing the pilates video I have, getting on the treadmill (my goal next month is going to include running, so I might as well get a start on that now) - anything that keeps me moving for 20 minutes or more.  I think that having Spring Break this week puts me at a slight advantage because I'm not working, so hopefully this extra time will get me in the routine of it all and make it easier next week when I am working again.

Anyone interested in having a virtual workout buddy?  I know that timing of working out and where we all live put us at a disadvantage to actually working out together, I'm always better when I have accountability and someone asking how I'm doing - it helps me stay on track better.  If anyone else is in a slump right now and needs some motivation, let me know - maybe we can help each other out!

Happy April everyone!
